How much will it cost to host my site?

That all depends on how big your site will be, as well as how much traffic your site receives.  All hosting services include domain name registration and excellent technical support.  View hosting packages here.

How much uptime do you guarantee?

99.9% uptime is guaranteed.  If you sign up elsewhere, make sure they guarantee 99.9%, not just 99%, because that extra .9 makes a big difference.

  • .999 × 720 = 719.28 hr up = .72 hr downtime.
  •   .99 × 720 = 712.80 hr up = 7.2 hr downtime.

Don't settle for less than 99.9% uptime.

What program do you use to build web pages?

Everything is coded by hand, for several reasons:

  • Editors such as FrontPage are too limiting, and pages created with them don't display correctly in all the major browsers.  Coding by hand gives complete control over the layout and functioning of the pages.

  • Those same editors add extra, unnecessary code to the pages, which causes pages to take more time to load.  The longer the load time, the more chance a visitor to your site will give up and leave.

  • Using FrontPage extensions will result in every single file and folder to be duplicated on your site, taking up twice the space that it does when files are uploaded via FTP.

One acquaintance of mine said he was impressed with a previous design of this website, and said it was even more impressive that I didn't use any of those design tools to create it.  Personally, I'd be more impressed to see someone do the same thing with one of those design tools and have it work in all browsers.

What is bandwidth?

Bandwidth has to do with the amount of information that is exchanged between the computer (server) where your website is hosted (stored) and the computer of the person visiting your site.  When you sign up for a hosting account, you are allowed a certain amount of bandwidth every month.  Think of that bandwidth as a large tank full of water.  When someone views a file on your website, they are taking water out of that tank:

Text-only pages are very small, so when one is viewed, they are taking a teaspoon full of water.  Images are larger than text files, so: a cup full of water.  For larger images, a pint or quart is being taken.  Sound files are larger, so imagine a gallon.  Every month your web host refills that tank, but if it runs out before then, your site can become inaccessible until the start of the next month's billing cycle, or you can be charged for more bandwidth.

For this reason, it's important to a lot of people to protect their bandwidth.  If you have pictures on your website that people like, they may decide to display them elsewhere.  If they simply use code to display a picture that is hosted on your website, it uses your bandwidth every time someone views that picture, no matter where it's displayed.  This is called "hotlinking."  Luckily, that can be prevented from happening to you, so you don't have to pay extra just so other people can "borrow" your pictures.
